While praising the Geneva LDC’s decision to expand its home ownership assistance program to all people working in the city, the Geneva Human Rights Commission has little good to say about the budget cut contained in the tentative 2013 city budget.

“The Commission was stunned to see the city manager’s targeted and unprecedented slashing of our funding in his proposed 2013 budget,” said Richard Thomas, HRC chairman.

City Manager Matt Horn’s proposed budget cuts Human Rights Commission funding 36 percent, from $55,000 to $35,000.

“This unfortunate strategy will severely limit the services we are able to provide, including our continued and critical obligations under the Geneva Community Compact,” Thomas said.

The compact contains a list of steps the city is taking in the aftermath of the 2011 shooting death of Cory Jackson by a Geneva police officer during a traffic stop on North Exchange Street.
