ITHACA — Tompkins County sheriff’s office investigators have arrested a Seneca County man on a rape charge.
Shemariah Owens, 22, of Tyre, was charged Wednesday with third-degree rape. The charge is a low-level (class E) felony.
Owens, a Level 3 sex offender, is accused of having sexual intercourse with a girl younger than 17. Investigators said the alleged incident occurred in October in the town of Enfield.
Owens was arraigned in town court and taken to the Tompkins County Jail on $5,000 bail or $10,000 bond. He is scheduled back in town court Monday.
Last month, Owens was charged by Seneca County sheriff’s office investigators with failure to register a change address as a sex offender and one count of first-degree offering a false instrument for filing. Police said Owens moved to Tyre from Johnson City in Broome County but did not file an address change with the state, as he is required to do.
Owens also is accused of filing a yearly address verification with the state in October stating he still lived in Johnson City.
