SARATOGA SPRINGS — The William Smith and Skidmore field hockey teams spent Saturday’s Liberty League championship game exchanging goals. In the end, the Thoroughbreds had the final answer.
Sam Skott’s goal with 2:13 left in regulation gave top-seeded Skidmore a 4-3 victory over 10th-ranked William Smith. The Thoroughbreds, ranked 12th nationally, took four leads in the game, only to see the Herons rally to tie the score three times.
Skidmore (17-3) scored in the sixth minute, but Julia Simmons provided the first goal William Smith (15-4) less than five minutes later. The home squad went ahead again at the 30-minute mark. Alessandra Patrizio scored for William Smith 26 seconds later to knot the score at 2-2.
The wild game continued as Skidmore scored 37 seconds into the second half. Margaret McConnell found the net in the 53rd minute to produce the final tie of the game that was ultimately broken by Skott.
Amy Feda stopped three shots in goal for the Herons. Simmons, Patrizio, Taylor Cappello and Morgan Atanasio were all named to the all-tournament team.
William Smith will look to earn an at-large bid into the upcoming NCAA DIII tournament. The field will be announced later on today.
