GENEVA — The William Smith College field hockey team celebrated just a day after losing the Liberty League tournament title game.
The 10th-ranked Herons found out Sunday night they received one of the six at-large bids to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship.
William Smith (15-4) will host New Paltz (13-8) in a first-round contest Wednesday at McCooey Field. The starting time was to be set later today.
A victory would set up a second-round battle with fourth-ranked Bowdoin College (14-3) Saturday at Montclair State.
Bowdoin also was selected as an at-large participant.
New Paltz stunned 14th-ranked Cortland with a comeback that resulted in a shootout victory, the SUNY Athletic Conference tournament title and an NCAA berth.
The Herons had been riding a two-game win streak over ranked foes before losing to 12th-ranked Skidmore in Saturday’s Liberty League final, 4-3.
William Smith beat 13th-ranked Messiah 4-3 in overtime Nov. 2 and 19th-ranked Rochester 3-0 Nov. 6.
The Herons will be making their 23rd postseason appearance under the direction of head coach Sally Scatton. William Smith has won three national championships.
