CORTLAND — The 10th-ranked William Smith field hockey team’s nine-game winning streak was in serious jeopardy Wednesday afternoon against non-conference foe Cortland.
The Herons trailed 3-1 at halftime but got two goals from junior Melanie O’Connor to force overtime.
When the extra time wouldn’t settle the contest, William Smith earned the 4-3 victory in a shootout (3-0) for its 10th-straight win.
Sara Helmer, Taylor Cappello and Annie Kietzman delivered shootout tallies to secure the win for the Herons (11-1).
Cappello netted her 14th goal of the season to erase a 1-0 first-half deficit. O’Connor doubled up in the tally column to reach six for the year and send the game to overtime.
William Smith’s Catherine Hare stopped two shots in 35 minutes. Taryn Little finished the game with eight saves.
