May 12--"Saturday Night Live" dove right into politics in the opening of Saturday's episode, with a parody of Chuck Todd's "Meet the Press" featuring frightened Republican senators who can't quit Trump.
Kyle Mooney starred as Todd, interviewing an all-Republican panel of GOP heavyweights -- including Beck Bennett as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell; Cecily Strong in a withering portrayal of Maine Senator Susan Collins; and Kate McKinnon as South Carolina's Lindsey Graham.
Even as the "Meet the Press" questioning started with the group's view on Trump's escalating trade war with China, Bennett's McConnell parroted the president's favorite line: "There's a simple answer to that, there was no collusion."
"What would it take for President Trump to lose your support?" Mooney's increasingly exasperated Todd asked, throwing out hypothetical scenarios, such as Robert Mueller testifying before Congress and saying that Trump had colluded with the Russians. "I'd have to write a strongly worded e-mail and send it directly to my draft folder," Strong's Collins said.
The scenarios continued through Trump hypothetically divorcing his wife Melania. "Love is a tricky thing," said Strong's Collins.
There was a support pause when the idea was floated of Trump leaving Melania for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and then promising to enact the Green New Deal.
"I would show up to the wedding, but not before I mumbled a strong rebuke quietly into my Lean Cuisine," said Strong's Collins.
"If Trump open-hand slaps you in the face, what would you say then?" Mooney's Todd asked. "Harder, Daddy," McKinnon's Graham said.
The senators did agree if Trump got "gay married" to the leader of ISIS there might be an issue.
"Then maybe," said Bennett's McConnell. "Ah, heck, who are we kidding? We'll always be ride or die (expletive)." ___
