Penn Yan winter preseason meeting
PENN YAN — The Penn Yan Academy preseason parent/athlete/coaches’ meeting for winter athletes will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 6 p.m. in the gymnasium.
The first practice/try-out dates are:
Wednesday, Nov. 1 — Modified boys basketball season starts; onday, Nov. 6 — All varsity & JV sports seasons begin; riday, Dec. 1 — Modified wrestling season starts; onday, Dec. 11 — Modified girls basketball season starts.
Newark Hall of Fame induction
NEWARK — The Newark Athletic Hall of Fame is proud to announce the second induction class of athletes, coaches, and supporters of Newark athletics.
The highest honor bestowed upon a Newark Red, this second group, selected by the Newark Hall of Fame committee made up of community members and active and retired coaches, joins last year’s highly-decorated inaugural class.
The inductees of the second class of the Newark Athletic Hall of Fame are:
Ron Ceravolo, Newark basketball coach, Class of 1967; Lenny “Rock” Colavito, football coach from 1973 to 1994; Ralph Nash, athlete, Class of 1969; 1990-1991 Newark boys basketball team; LaTanya Parker, athlete, Class of 1999; Charlie Ross, contributor, sports writer, 1950s, ’60s, ’70s and ’80s; Tim Tanea, athlete and coach, Class of 1975; and Mychal Wilkes, athlete, Class of 2003.
The induction ceremony and dinner will take place Saturday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m. at the Newark Garden Inn. Tickets are $30 and can be obtained by contacting the Newark CSD Athletic Office at 315-332-3241 or the Alex Eligh Community Center at 315-331-2532.
Lyons student athletes
LYONS — Riley DeCola and Mara Briggs were selected September Student Athletes of the Month at Lyons High School.
DeCola, a freshman, led the volleyball team in assists, works hard and is at every practice ready to compete. Briggs, a sophomore, is a dedicated athlete and is always looking to improve her skills. She works hard every day in practices and games and shows leadership on the court. She also demonstrates a positive attitude and spends time and effort to improve her game.
The Senior Athlete for the month of October is Kaitlyn DeCola. She went undefeated in league play at second singles and is second in her class. DeCola represented her team at individual sectionals as a doubles partner with Kelsey Arliss.
The Junior Athlete for the month of October is Alexis West. She is involved with varsity club and leadership club and keeping everyone up with all homecoming prep. West is the lead in the fall play as well as performing for the Wayne County Historical Society in the production “A Tea Out of Time.” She also spends many hours volunteering with Jr. Lions Cheer while maintaining a 90-plus average.
