GENEVA — Hobart College linebacker Emmett Forde was named to Street & Smith’s 2020 preseason All-America team. He’s the first Statesman recognized by the annual college football preview magazine since Shane Sweeney in 2017.

“Emmett was a major factor for the production of our defense and success of the team last season,” says Head Coach Kevin DeWall to hwsathletics.com. “Knowing his work ethic and commitment to getting better, we are eager and hopeful to see him compete at an even higher level this fall.”

Forde is coming off a monstrous season. In 2019, he lead Hobart with 81 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, seven sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. The Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year led the conference in fumble recoveries, forced fumbles per game, and tackles for loss per game.

For his efforts, Forde was named was named to the Associated Press, American Football Coaches Association and D3football.com All-America teams.

As a linebacker, Forde spent a large portion of his time in the opponent’s backfield this past season, ranking 16th in the nation in tackles for loss. His 21 tackles behind the line of scrimmage rank fifth on Hobart’s single season list and are the most by a Statesman since Tyre Coleman ‘15 had 28.5 in 2014.

Forde had three straight games with 10 or more tackles in 2019, making a season-high 12 stops against Montclair State, 10 at Union and 12 more against Rensselaer. He also had a season-high 3.5 tackles for loss against the Engineers. Forde opened the season with eight tackles and a pair of interceptions against Brockport.

Forde’s tackles and tackles for loss during his junior season, represented significant jumps over his sophomore campaign. He increased his tackles total by nearly 56% and saw his tackles for loss total leap 223%.

In 30 career games, Forde has 139 tackles, 27.5 for loss, 8.5 sacks, seven pass breakups, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

Hobart was 9-2 last season, winning the New York State Bowl, 30-10 at Cortland. After graduating 12 seniors, the Statesmen will return 13 starters, seven on defense and six on offense.
