The St. John Fisher track and field team has been accumulating quite a collection of talent from the Wayne-Finger Lakes league over the past few years.

Most recently, a former Lion has been giving the Cardinals a hint of what the future could be.

The Fisher women finished fifth out of 16 teams in the Brockport Golden Eagle Invitational on the last weekend of January.

Freshman and Lyons grad Emily Strong teamed with Jess Colmerauer (Canandaigua) and two teammates to record a third-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. The same foursome also finished third in the RIT Invitational Jan. 16, placing third with an ECAC-qualifying time of 1:49.22.

The Cardinals competed in the New York City Gotham Cup Jan. 22 on Staten Island. Strong and Colmerauer each dialed up personal bests in the 400 dash. Strong crossed the line in 1:01.68, while Colmerauer was hot on her heels with a time of 1:01.79.

Also at the Gotham Cup, Sammy VanGee (Marion) finished seventh in the 5,000 run and set a Fisher record in the process with a time of 18:22. It is the 16th-best time in the country among D3 runners.

VanGee also took fourth in the 3,000 run at the RIT invy with a time of 10:52.57. She competed in the RIT Early Season Invite Dec. 10, where she was first in the 1,000 run.

In early January, the Cardinals took part in the Southern Tier Collegiate Open at Cornell. Sarah Coon (Red Jacket) racked up a New York State Collegiate Track Conference “B” standard qualifying time in the 1,000 run (3:14.63). Colmerauer also qualified in the 200 (27.90 seconds).

The Cardinals began their indoor season at the Brockport Early Season Invy. VanGee was second in the 5,000 with an ECAC-qualifying time of 18:35.07. Coon placed fourth in the 3,000 (10:47.18).

The Fisher women’s roster also includes Canandaigua grads Jessica Locke and Genevive Rotz.

The Fisher men’s team includes Geneva alums Chuck Collins, Tyler Wilkie and William Coon, Zach Hemminger (Midlakes), Jacob Jackson (Sodus) and Noah Murray (North Rose-Wolcott).

Hemminger came in fifth in the triple jump at the RIT Invy.
