GENEVA — High-risk winter sports began practice this week, with games set to begin next week. In less than a month, the winter season will ramp up and overlap with the Fall II sports season — a rare crossroads of football and basketball meeting before spring sports get underway.


In 2001, Newark softball came within a game of reaching the Class B state finals. Two years later, the Reds solved that semifinal riddle on the way to earning a state championship.

CANANDAIGUA — The Finger Lakes Community College softball team was on its way to Myrtle Beach, S.C., to start the season when their spring trip was cut short — abruptly — due to COVID-19.

In 1999, I played second base for the New York state Class B champion Geneva High Softball team. I vividly remember suiting up for a Class B vs. Class BB game against Waterloo after we had each won our respective Section V titles.


PHELPS — Not too often are fans treated to two heavyweights clashing in a championship or state qualifying game. There is often too much parity in a sport like softball for that to happen.
