AVOCA — The Marcus Whitman wrestling team won the 12-team Avoca Duals on Saturday with an impressive 4-1 record.

The Wildcats would win their pool with victories over Bath, Alfred Almond and two-time defending tournament champion Cortland.

The three pool winners would meet in a round robin format in the finals. Whitman took down Williamson, but would fall to Hornell. Thanks to a Williamson win over Hornell, the tournament champion would be decided by total match points and the Wildcats took the title with 83 points. Williamson finished in second and Hornell took third.

Charlie Burgess led the way for Whitman with five pins on the day at 126 pounds. Preston Smith (182 pounds) picked up four wins by fall for the Wildcats, who also got three pins from both John Chappelle (145) and Dylan Howell (138).

Katlin Wells (120), Andrew Norrison (152), Jacob Hill (195) and Justin Smith (106) all had two wins by fall with Smith decking one of his opponents in just 13 seconds.

David Horn (132) and Sean MacLennan (285) also had pins for Whitman.

Midlakes 1-4 at Pal-Mac tourney

PALMYRA — The Midlakes Screaming Eagles would go 1-4 on Saturday, including a heartbreaking 40-39 loss to Finger Lakes East rival Pal-Mac.

Both Pal-Mac and Midlakes would finish with 39 team points, but the Red Raiders would earn the win on a tiebreaker. The two teams will square off again at Pal-Mac on Thursday in a Finger Lakes East showdown.

Midlakes took down Canandaigua 57-28, but fell to Canisteo-Greenwood (45-39), Lancaster (45-36) and Webster Thomas (60-24).

Ryan MacDonnell (126), Robert Middlebrook (195) and Hammond Raes (220) all went 5-0 for Midlakes. Middlebrook had three pins, including a 15-second fall, while Raes pinned two opponents and MacDonnell had one pin.

Zach Notebart (145), Curtis Grimes (170), Connor Young (182) and Blake Smith (285) all had two pins for the Eagles.

NR-W competes at Holley Duals

HOLLEY — The North Rose-Wolcott Cougars finished 2-3 at the Holley Duals over the weekend.

NR-W beat Campbell-Savona 51-30 and took down Canisius 48-33. The Cougars fell to Holley-Kendall (51-27), Eastridge (45-32) and Greece (55-24).

Dominic Eriksen led NR-W with four pins. Dominick Salerno picked up four wins, including three by fall and Jake Minier won two decisions and had two pins. Pedro Pascual and Dylan Hicks both had three wins, including a pair of pins.
